Designing the Disneyland Landscape is a one-hour presentation that delves into the extraordinary design efforts and imagination involved in creating the world’s most famous amusement park. The presentation begins with the short film, “Ruth Shellhorn: Midcentury Design in Southern California” before landscape architect Kelly Comras elaborates on the nitty-gritty details of making Disneyland into a dream come true—from how the park’s current site in Anaheim was chosen to how modernist architect Welton Becket—a friend of Walt Disney’s—stepped in when he realized the disastrous design problems that were threatening to run the project off-course.
The exciting world of Disneyland opens up to attendees as Comras details how landscape architects Bill and Jack Evans earned their place at Disney by crafting the icon’s garden to hold a read train, or how a young woman ended up rescuing the entire project.
