Where to Eat in Twentynine Palms

Twentynine Palms sits at the eastern end of the corridor, at the park's north entrance and the Oasis Visitor Center. It is a Marine Corps town — the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center sits just north of it — and that gives it a different character from Joshua Tree village or Yucca Valley. More year-round residents, fewer weekenders, and a food scene built for people who live here rather than people passing through for two nights.

For visitors that cuts both ways. The rooms are less crowded and generally less expensive than the ones near the west entrance, and several of them are genuinely good. But the town is spread along a long stretch of highway rather than concentrated in a walkable block, so eating here means driving between things.

It is also the far end from Yucca Valley. If you are staying in Twentynine Palms you are close to the north gate and a good half hour from the supermarkets, which is the trade for staying out this way.

The two rooms worth planning around

Kitchen in the Desert has been going since 2015 and it is the most distinctive restaurant in town — a Black-owned kitchen serving Trinidadian-influenced American food on a large outdoor patio on a residential side street. Jerk chicken, ribeye, mezcal drinks, fire pits, string lights, and a stage that books local musicians and comedians. It runs brunch and dinner and it does not feel like anywhere else on the corridor.

The Restaurant at the 29 Palms Inn sits on the Oasis of Mara, the palm oasis that gave the town its name, and it grows a good deal of its own produce at Faultline Farm. It bakes its own sourdough and makes its own soups and dressings, and the outdoor seating runs misters for the hot months. It is not open every day of the week, so check before you drive out.

Both take reservations and both benefit from them in season. Neither is large.

Beer, ribs, and the bakery with the line

GRND SQRL is the downtown gastropub — scratch cooking, an unusually deep craft beer list for a town this size, and burgers people drive in for. 29 Palms Beer Co. is the brewery the same owners opened a few blocks away, brewing on site with a taproom and a shaded patio. Between the two of them Twentynine Palms has better beer than the rest of the corridor combined.

The Rib Co. is the mesquite grill — baby back ribs with a house rub, hand-cut steaks, cornbread before the meal. It has been in town a long time and it sits consistently at the top of the local lists. It is the closest thing to a special-occasion room on this end.

Campbell Hill Bakery is a husband-and-wife operation on the highway that bakes bread, bagels, and pastry, then does thick pan-style pizzas with toppings that change daily and get announced on Instagram before they open. It keeps a short week and it draws a line out the door. Both of those are worth checking before you build a plan around it.

Making Twentynine Palms work

The case for basing out here is the north gate. You are minutes from the Oasis Visitor Center and you skip the west-entrance queue entirely, which in spring is a real advantage — that line runs long on a Saturday morning. You also get quieter streets and generally more house for the money.

The case against is everything else being a drive. Yucca Valley's groceries are a half hour west. Pioneertown is farther still. If your trip is built around Pappy's and the village restaurants, staying out here adds a dark highway drive to every evening.

The compromise most people land on is one night out here even when they are staying west — usually dinner at Kitchen in the Desert or the 29 Palms Inn, timed around a sunset in the park's northern half. That works well and it is a short enough drive to do without much planning.

The corridor turns over faster than the valley does, and this end is no exception. Ask your local manager what is currently open before you plan a drive out east around any one room.
