Hosted by the Palm Springs Historical Society, the Palm Springs Heart of the City Tour is a fun and informative walking tour that dives into the history and culture of Palm Springs. Read on below to learn more about this Palm Springs, CA tour!
Running from 9:00am to 10:30am on each day of both the Modernism Week Fall Preview (a four-day annual event in mid-October) and Modernism Week (a week and a half-long event that takes place each February), the Palm Springs Heart of the City Tour is open to visitors ages twelve years and above for $35.00 per person.
This is one of the most popular Palm Springs walking tours and consists of a guided walking excursion through some of the most iconic city blocks in Palm Springs near Tahquitz Canyon Way. See the Oasis Hotel, designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Make a stop at the Welwood Murray Memorial Library. Get a glimpse of a host of Palm Springs’ earliest modernist buildings. Visit the site of La Plaza, notable for its Spanish-influenced stucco buildings with vibrant red tile roofs and eye-pleasing arched passageways, in addition to being one of the first shopping centers in the country since its opening in 1936.
By visiting these iconic locations, visitors will gain insight and appreciation into Palm Springs’ intriguing history as the playground of the rich and the famous, and how very different this town would have been without the ingenuity of Pearl McCallum McManus and other famous female residents of Palm Springs.
The Palm Springs Heart of the City Tour departs from the famous McCallum Adobe building, built in 1884 and remaining the city’s oldest existing structure to this day. You’ll find the McCallum Adobe inside of The Village Green, nestled within the heart of Palm Springs’ greatest shopping, dining, historic hotels, and nightlife.
Tickets for the Heart of the City Tour can also be purchased outside of Modernism Week and the Fall Preview through the Palm Springs Historical Society. The Heart of the City Tour is hosted on a weekly basis during October through early March. Tours depart on Wednesday mornings at 9:30am and on Saturday mornings at 11:00am.
