The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

We know it’s tempting to just lounge around the pool at your Acme vacation rental home, but if you do just one activity in the Palm Springs area, we suggest a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, the world’s largest rotating tramcar. Enjoy breathtaking views on the 2.5-mile ride to the wilderness of Mt. San Jacinto State Park (elevation 8,516 feet). Once you arrive, options for hiking, guided nature walks, and even snowshoeing abound along with restaurants, observation decks, and a natural history museum and documentary theater. Close to Acme House Company vacation rentals in Palm Springs, and well worth the drive from vacation homes in Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta, and Cathedral City, the Tramway is a favorite thing to do in Palm Springs!

An Elevated Experience

Built in 1963, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway was original used as way to get from the floor of Coachella Valley up to the spectacular views and cool climate of San Jacinto Peak. The 18-foot diameter rotating tramcar offers passengers breathtaking views of Chino Canyon as it travels up sheer mountains and through five biomes, or life zones, to its final destination at Mountain Station in Mount San Jacinto State Park. It is much cooler at the top of the mountain, so be sure to bring your jacket. Nature trails abound in the park, and wintertime offers plenty of snow play. If you want to trek in the backcountry, a permit can be obtained from the U.S. Forest Service. The summit area is a photographer’s paradise! On clear days, an awe-inspiring panorama awaits you, with views extending upward of 200 miles to the north and 75 miles to the east and west. If you look towards the southeast, you will be greeted with a stunning view of the Salton Sea.

Top of the Line Dining

At the 8,500-foot summit, you will find two restaurants, Pines Café and Peaks Restaurant. Pines Café offers standard American lunch and dinner fare and is a perfect place to take the whole family. If you are looking for upscale fine dining with the best views around, Peaks Restaurant serves the ultimate in fresh regional cuisine. Using only the finest local ingredients, dry aged meats and poultry, and fresh locally baked breads, Peaks Restaurant makes for a culinary experience you won’t soon forget. If you just want to kick back and enjoy a cocktail after a day of playing in the mountains, head over The Lookout Lounge, which is located near the restaurants. There is also a gift shop at Mountain Station for picking up some cool souvenirs before you descend.
