Palm Springs – Advanced bookings for Palm Springs vacation home rentals during the first weekend in December are at an all time high. The increasing popularity of The Festival of Lights Parade, which historically draws thousands of spectators, has helped to boost occupancy at Palm Springs vacation home rentals for what was in the past, considered to be one of the local hospitality industry’s slower weeks.
According to Mike Flannery, President of Acme House Co., which manages 65 vacation rental homes in Palm Springs proper, advance booking inquiries for the first weekend in December are up 22% over last year. That represents an increase of 31% and 33% over 2012 and 2011 respectively. The company is crediting the increase to the growing popularity of the December 6th Festival of Lights Parade, now in its 23rd year, and the special sale they are running on Traditional Villa style homes.
“At this time of year, people seem to be drawn to our Spanish-style haciendas and villas that offer that old world charm,” explained Ken Hudnall, Reservations Manager for Acme House Co. “Fireplaces, brick and stone work, and larger formal dining rooms are our most-requested amenities for that weekend. It seems that our guests are looking for those more traditional touches associated with the nostalgic feel of yesteryear. We have had increased interest from families with young children who are traveling from the Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Diego drive markets who are specifically coming to Palm Springs for the parade.”
The company is running a special on their 3-4 bedroom villas with old world style. According to Hudnall, pool homes with midcentury architectural style are still in demand, but for this particular weekend, booking requests are trending toward properties with warmer more traditional Spanish and Moorish-style architecture.
Consistently named one of the best local events in the Coachella Valley, the Parade was also voted one of the Top Ten Holiday Parades in the country in an AOL survey. “Over the years, the Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade has become a beloved holiday tradition in downtown – bringing thousands of Coachella Valley residents and their families as well as tourists from all over the world to come see the twinkling floats while celebrating the joy of the holiday season,” said Mayor Steve Pougnet. “There’s no other special event in the Coachella Valley quite like it!”
If You Go: The Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade is free and open to the public. The Parade begins promptly at 5:45 PM on Saturday, December 6th.
